Kitchen/Garden Program

23/05/2017
Recently we have had some people ask about our Kitchen/Garden Program. What is it? and Why do we do it? So this week we thought we would give everyone old and new to Nashville some background information about the program.
In 2015 we joined the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program. The purpose of the program is to introduce pleasurable food education to children during their learning years, in order to form positive food habits for life.
Pleasurable food education emphasises the flavours as well as the health benefits of fresh, seasonal, delicious food. Dishes cooked reflect the vegetables, herbs and fruits grown season-by-season, by the children in our garden and also reflect the Australian Dietary Guidelines. In the kitchen we emphasise the concepts of balance and moderation.
Our program offers infinite possibilities to reinforce literacy, numeracy, science and all aspects of environmental sustainability. In addition, the program encourages critical thinking, teamwork, problem solving an understanding of cause and effect and increased level of observation.
We are now in our third year of the program, we have achieved amazing things in just three years- a functioning garden complete with watering system, composting system, worm farms, a fully equipped kitchen complete with a stocked pantry, weekly Garden Stall run by students, an active Kitchen Garden Facebook page, weekly kitchen and garden classes, fabulous weekly volunteers and so much more! We are super excited for the future of this wonderful program.
